1. The connection between African music and jazz is that most of the people who play it are black.
2. African Americans both found jazz and African music. They both are different but are strong music genres!
3. I think one developed into another because they’re both hard music types to define. Also Jazz makes heavy use of improvisation, polyrhythms, syncopation while African music frequently relies heavily on percussion instruments of every variety, including xylophones, drums, and tone-producing instruments such as the mbira or “thumb piano.

The connection between african druming and jazz music is that they are alike and they were found by the same person (i think). The musical characteristics are rythm and beats. I think that they are developed one into another by one person combining the two together and other people copied.

1. The connection between African music and Jazz is the rhythm. Also that the main instrument in both is drums. the percussion may also sound/be the same.
2. Some Musical characteristics used in both could be fixed chord changes or tempos.
3. I think one developed into the other from African-Americans bringing it into the other country and using ideas and styles from the other to bring back and put in their music. Jazz emerged in many parts of the United States of independent popular musical styles.

1. The connection African music and jazz is the rhythm.
2. Improvisation and created spontaneously without preparation. I.e creating a different groove or rhythm on impulse.
3. West African music developed into jazz through the transportation of slaves from Africa to the Deep South of America and the combining of the European folk music and African rhythms. Having no instruments meant that only voices and percussive objects could be used.

1. The connection between jazz and african music is that long ago when Americans brought Aficans to America they brought over the musical talents and ideas.
2. The similarities between African native music and American jazz music are that they use similar rythm patterns like syncopation and bended notes
3. When the aficans would play together in marching bands they would start with the music told to them and after a while they decided to change and devolop the style a bit by adding jazzier tunes to the music.

October 9, 2014 at 8:27 pm
1.) the connection is that they both have the same sort of rythm as each other
2.)they both have an off beat that is quieter than the main sounds but actually created quite an impact on the overall sound
3.) Because they are played by people of partly the same race so they pass on all these techniques from their culture in both genres and end up with the same sort of rythm and develop into one another

very good observations Cheyenne!

October 10, 2014 at 12:17 pm
this is not exactly what I was thinking! Some good musical vocabulary has been used but you have not “joined the dots” yet! You’re getting there!
October 10, 2014 at 1:35 pm
1) The connection between the two is they both sometimes have a fifth note.
2) I think that they both make you want to dance plus they are both rhythmic.
3) I think that they developed into one another because jazz and African music both use improvisation and lots of African music has very distinctive voices and so does jazz.

2. Rhythm and beat
3. I think that because they are both quite “bouncy” and relaxing that the Africans got the more complicated and relaxing from the Jazz and the African-Americans got the more bouncy and fun from the drumming.

1. The Africans were imported to North America as slaves in the 1800s, so they were in the same place as the Americans.
2. The both use off beats and cross rythms I think
3.They were at the same place, so their music sort of fused together to created Jazz.
Basically jazz is sort of half African music and half American Music
